Facebook broke ground on the first data center they have ever owned and it is going to be located in Prineville. Up until now Facebook has rented space in other data centers. The data center is going to be a 147,000 square foot building, cost $200 million to build, and will employ 35 full time employees, dozens of part time employees, and other contact workers. Prineville (and Central Oregon) really needed a boost to the economy, so this is really awesome to see! I find it very interesting that the first data center they are going to own in the country or world is going to be located about 20 miles from my house!
I listened to an interview with the director of the Prineville Facebook facility on the evening news. He said the reason they picked Prineville is due to it being an ideal climate for a data centers since it doesn't really get too hot or too cold there. Prineville is definitely a lot more mild than the rest of Central Oregon. Makes sense considering maintaining consistent data center temperatures costs a TON and creates tremendous amounts of air pollution.
